This is the Script to Use When Contacting Schools About Eddie Eagle

eddieEddie Eagle is a program launched by the NRA to help protect kids from guns and accidents related to guns. Do you remember the DARE program? Cop goes into school and tells kids not to do drugs? Same kind of concept but with centered around teaching the kids not to play with guns. The NRA donates all the materials to the school (workbooks and DVD) at no cost and a local law enforcement officer, trained in the program facilitates the discussion in the school.

So why isn't every elementary school using the program? Mostly I believe it is because they don't know about it. So, my challenge for you today is to take the first step in reaching out to the head administrator of the elementary school near you (or that if your kids, grand-kids, or other children in your circle of influence) and make sure the school is at very least informed about the program. Here is the script that so far has never failed to solicit the desired response:

Dear [Insert name of school administrator],

I was wondering if you would be open to receiving some no cost materials about a program facilitated by law enforcement nationwide in elementary schools to teach kids not to play with or touch guns? I would be happy to send the information.

Sincerely yours,

[Insert your name and contact info here]

When they respond with a yes and request more information proceed to http://eddieeagle.nra.org/ to put in a request. Anyone can request and receive a sample of the materials free of cost. Also call or email the Eddie eagle team and inquire as to which law enforcement agencies in your area are already trained in the program.

Now pat yourself on the back. You have done something very valuable for the next generation.

Tell us about your own experience with Eddie Eagle in the comments below. Are you familiar with the program? Aware of schools that use it? Have you ever introduced it to a school? What was the reaction? Please respond in the comments below.
