Businesses That Prohibit Guns or Have No Gun Policies

businesses that prohibit guns

A broad look at companies that have policies against guns. Where possible the company's policy has been included and an external link to additional information has been added.

NOTE: These companies have published a policy. That doesn't mean they have posted a sign at each location or that they can legally prohibit you from carrying at their locations. Please consult with a local attorney about your local laws and dealing with places that prohibit or restrict your second amendment rights.

The core purpose of this list is NOT to inform you where you can or can't carry. The point is to recommend you “vote with your wallet” by not supporting companies that inherently don't wish to support your right to carry.

Now, before you FREAK OUT or make your comment below… please remember what was stated above.

1: This list does NOT indicate where you can or can't legally carry. In fact, most of these corporations don't publically post prohibitions.

2: Laws vary from place to place. A “company policy” on a corporate website or a press release from a CEO given many years ago, may or may not have any legal implications in your area.

3: Of course concealed is concealed and you can do what you want and etc etc etc.

4: Local managers and franchise owners are likely to run their own stores differently and may or may not always be in line with corporate policy.

5: Not all of these businesses are wholly against you having a gun. Several have just asked you to not Open Carry in their stores. While we consider this an anti-gun policy it is a significantly different message and position than fully prohibiting firearms.

Now that I've reminded you what the above list IS NOT… let me clarify what the above list IS:

This is a list of businesses that have expressed that they do not fully support your right to carry a firearm.

Why would we make this list? Because while it is important to know what you can legally do or what you can tactically get away with… it's also valuable to know what companies you may choose NOT to support financially because of their corporate policies.

I have been in Peet’s Coffee in Illinois as well as several Outback restaurants. They display no sign that says you cannot carry a concealed weapon in their restaurant.

        • Michael McKeever on June 9, 2018 at 10:44 am

          Dear Pete;

Let me set you straight on Outback restaurants, as I have gone thru that situation already.

We used to visit Outbacks quite regularly – no more.

On a visit with my entire family, we noticed a fairly small sign, that said something like this:

‘While we endorse your Constitutional rights, we do not recognize the carrying of firearms in our restaurants.’

That is not a quote simply because it has been some time and I do not remember the exact wording; but it is extremely close.

The next day, I returned and spoke to the manager. I voiced my displeasure with his contradictory sign and explained very nicely – but very bluntly – that neither myself or any of my family would be returning. He explained that it was Outback’s policy, although he had heard several complaints.

A couple of months later, I read an article in one of the local 2nd Amendment newsletters I receive that Outback had taken the sign down. I returned to the restaurant to verify and sure enough it was gone. I went in and asked for the manager and he rather rudely explained that the sign had indeed been removed, due to complaints, BUT their policies remained the same.

I don’t support businesses who do not support – in full – our Constitution. “Constitutional” Americans have supported these anti Second Amendment businesses for decades by spending their hard earned money in their establishments. In turn, these so called American companies then take those funds and contribute to anti-Constitutional causes, anti Constitutional candidates and then impose anti-Constitutional policies. As for this Texas Conservative – NO MORE and I will continue to spread the word as per this list and others to anyone who cares about what’s left of our so-called “Rights”.

          • Danny O. on September 6, 2019 at 11:39 am

            Thanks you Michael,
This is the stand that ALL pro-gun owners (licensed or not) need to have, especially here in Texas. If these “anti-American/anti-Constitution/anti-gun” companies exclude gun-owners, we SHOULD exclude them as well.
I have contacted Texas DPS several times to report companies that I’ve found violating the Texas Carry Laws by NOT posting the proper signage to let us know up front when we are not welcome, so that we can then make that decision as to whether we still want to do business with them, or go to another store that DOES welcome open OR concealed carry. At least my way of thinking.
Responsible gun-owners that have gone through the process of obtaining a license to carry in Texas are not the bad guys, we are the GOOD Guys (and Ladies). We are not the people you should be excluding. It’s not the guns that are the problem, it’s the BAD guys that are the problem. Excluding LAWFUL CARRY of a firearms by your customers is a threat to the bad guys coming into your store to do bad stuff. Eliminating us leaves an open door for the bad guys, and you unprotected. I’ve been a customer of my bank for 26 years now, so when open-carry became legal in Texas, I asked them how they felt about me carrying open inside the bank, and they said, and I quote, “That’s fine with us. You are protection for us while you are in the bank!” This is the mindset that EVERYONE should have. Personal Protection is important people. The only thing that can protect you against a bad guys with a gun, is a good guy (or Lady) with a gun. Thanks again Mike.

          • Patrone on September 24, 2019 at 3:37 pm

The only defense against a Bad Guy with a gun is a Good Guy with a gun, Gun free zones are in fact really just invitation for the bad guy to go unopposed in their twisted premeditated act.
In today’s world of everyone being just a number, the only way to make your opinion known & count to merchants is not by quietly withholding money and business because that will likely go unnoticed.
We must speak up in consumer feedback.
            Become active!!!

          • Isabelle on March 19, 2022 at 4:48 pm

That is so messed up that they can remove the sign but then still say you can’t carry!! How would someone know?!

        • John on December 15, 2020 at 7:20 pm

How would they know anyways if it’s concealed? They wouldn’t…

          • Don on May 10, 2022 at 10:14 am

The bigger question is, is such a policy enforceable? In Texas, there are specific rules on where such signs should be posted, how the signs must look, and how big they have to be. If the signage rules are met and you violate whatever the sign says, you lose the “Innocence” component of self-defense and could be prosecuted if you are caught armed or have to use your weapon. If the signage rules aren’t met, it’s not a crime in Texas to violate them. The business can only ask you to leave if they notice you’re armed, and then you should leave to avoid a trespassing charge.

Note that I’m not an attorney so can’t give legal advice, but I have a 2A attorney to answer my questions, thanks to my self-defense insurance policy. Plus all this was covered in my license to carry class.

I don’t mind a no-open-carry policy, since I always go concealed — I don’t want to spoil the surprise. But I find it particularly troubling that even when confronted with proof that a no-weapons policy puts people at risk, these businesses continue the policy. “This policy was in effect prior the recent events in Colorado and remains our policy going forward” is like a long-winded way for them to say, “we’re stupid.”

          • Woodrow on September 7, 2023 at 7:09 am

If you get caught you can catch a felony and revocation of license, depending on State laws. It is the principle not if they know or not anyway, you don’t want to support an establishment that doesn’t support your right to carry.

      • Rob on July 22, 2018 at 9:56 am

Good. One less person thinking they can infringe upon others rights to public safety. Lets be clear. You have a right to buy a gun, own a gun, hunt wiith a gun and practice with your guns in controlled spaces. You can even carry guns in your vehicle depending on what state you live in. However you do not and should never have the right to infringe on my right to feel safe, nor the right of business owners who are on private property, to say to you “NO GUNS ON PREMISES EXCEPT LAW ENFORCEMENT”> And if you think you have a right to do whatever you want, try coming on my property, dude. You will not have my permissionand you will be arrested.

        • Common sense on August 4, 2018 at 8:23 am

You have all the rights you want on your private property but if you’re as blind to common sense as you sound, post your address and ring the dinner bell so criminals know they will be the only armed people at your establishment.

Rob you most certainly have the right to express your views about guns and gun owners rights that’s the great thing about this country but think about this. You say come to your property and you will be arrested. An individual with a firearm in the time your waiting for the cops to show up can do a —- load of damage to you and your family, food for thought

          • Robert on November 3, 2022 at 1:30 pm

I know that your question is rhetorical and it makes an obvious point. As our world around us “devolves” liberals lists of rights are increasing as conservative or libertarian rights are diminishing. Up until recently in human history, most people with greatly differing world views still agreed upon many of the same basic human rights, That is not the case any longer as the liberals are essentially distancing themselves from humanity and morphing into something more bestial.

        • Jason on March 14, 2019 at 10:10 pm

Actually Rob, you have to inform the trespassing person they are trespassing once and have them escorted off your private property before they can be arrested for trespassing. Unless of course you have signs posted that say no trespassing.

        • Tom on March 26, 2019 at 8:37 am

“Right to feel safe”. What a joke. I can’t believe you actually used the word “infringed” while trying to justify taking away someone else’s protected right.

Our Constitutional Rights trump your “feelings” every single time.

Uh not in Arizona Dude, First you will have to ask the gentleman or gentlewoman to leave and give them a chance to comply to leave your property, Only if they refuse to leave and sit and wait.. Then you can get the cops involved and maybe if they are lucky they will have a car that is available to come get them and apprehend them… if they comply eh your shit out of luck other than getting their picture putting it up and banning them…but each state is different on trespass laws.

What enumerated right says you get to feel safe everywhere you go?

          • Joe Rasunti on September 5, 2019 at 4:55 pm

From the constitution from which the bill of rights evolve, I have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Also, Fourth Amendment. Amendment IV The right of the people to be secure in their persons…

To distill property rights: Property rights refer to the theoretical and legal ownership of specific property by individuals and the ability to determine how such property is used.

The second amendment (depending on interpretation of the phrase A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State) may give you the right to keep and bear arms, but that is your right regarding the federal government. Your right to keep and bear arms does not prohibit a private entity from infringing upon them.

        • Robert Joseph on April 5, 2019 at 7:44 pm

You are a typical anti-gunner dumbass. You think you are in danger from law abiding gun owners. The criminals who come to do harm will completely ignore your ridiculous opinion and rob you anyway. I would refer you to the electronics robbery in the early 70’s where the criminals forced the employees to drink Draino. Without guns, that could be your employees next.
You are discriminating against people who have been checked out by law enforcement to get a CCW.

In my town we have half a dozen of those companies. NONE of them are stupid enough to have a no guns policy posted. As mentioned in the article, each owner here is allowed to use good sense. They are much more intelligent than you.
In short, you’re hurting your business by preventing honest people from coming in your establishment. At the same time, criminals will be encouraged by your free fire zone.

          • Joe Rasunti on September 5, 2019 at 5:04 pm

They are not “discriminating.” That would involve gun owners to be a protected class. While they are a vast minority, they aren’t a protected class. As for being checked out by law enforcement, that’s a joke. That background check only shows that you’ve been caught at something. It fails to complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation so that we can be sure you have an even temperament, etc.

I wouldn’t trust you or anybody else with a gun around me.

Last I checked, CCW holders only account for about 5.5% of U.S. citizens. Firearm ownership is best guessed at about 25%.

How is it that other countries (i.e. Japan) have very strict firearms laws and don’t worry about you examples? Maybe is the U.S. didn’t have more firearms than people, they wouldn’t be so available to criminals. No, that can’t be it since it actually makes sense.

          • Angela on August 22, 2020 at 5:04 am

Your opinion is responsible for all of the mass shootings and any armed crimes. You might as well be holding the weapon yourself, because you allow it.

Clearly, you can google. You know that authorities are eventually called in crimes involve a weapon, but it’s always too late. You also know that in a majority of cases the weapon is taken into gun free zones? There isn’t a force field that prevents them from entering. Did you you know that many times the weapons are stolen? Criminals don’t care about laws. I know this is shocking news for you.

Did you ever listen to the audio of Columbine? The shooter goes into the library where a substitute was on the phone with 911. The shooter tells all the students to get up and then shoots them all, including the teacher. If she were allowed to carry it would have been completely different. I bawled when I heard it.

You prevented her and every other innocent person from defending his/her life and the lives of others.

So go home feel safe. Oh don’t worry if I’m ever around you and or your family and are under attack my gun will stay holstered as you wait the average 11 minutes for the police to show up. BTW good job advertising you go unarmed. Hope you still feel safe looking out the window for criminals to come in.

about this is everybody who believes in contitusion pick a day and boycott them. We have to be sure and do it pick a date let them know it will happen. You would only need a few million people . We need to do something instead whining and quit letting a few miniority groups dictate what the majority of the people do in this free Country.

        • Leslie Petoski on December 10, 2019 at 4:59 pm

@Rob. How can you not realize that you are rendered ENTIRELY VULNERABLE without a weapon to defend yourself against harm? There is nothing more basic in life than this truth. Even animals fully understand this. Those of us who legally carry do so with the sole purpose of self-protection. While we have rights afforded us by our Creator for self-protection as the US Constitution illuminates, we live in a modern culture among people who have access to these same weapons who seek to harm vulnerable people. *** NO ONE IS SAFE*** That is the reality that you deny. Unlike you, we take responsibility for our own protection and will defend ourselves and others should the occasion present itself.

        • Dan Bell Cooper on February 13, 2020 at 4:56 pm

Here is the problem with your “private property” reasoning. What you say would be true if the right to private property were actually absolute. But it is not absolute and the government, both local, state, federal, infringes on private property in all kinds of ways for a myriad of purposes, many of which are not not clearly enshrined in the bill of rights. Try having a restaurant with a sign that says no blacks or no Mohammedans. Newsflash, you cannot. Hell, even try having a restaurant or bar where smoking is allowed. Again, you can’t. So long as the government can supersede private property rights in the name of civil rights, those civil rights must be made to include the right to keep and bear arms. This is the stance every gun owner and supporter of the second amendment must take. Too many are persuaded by libertarian arguments that equate to rolling over and taking it.

          • helpful55 on February 11, 2021 at 3:29 pm

Dan I think you have got it there. The gov’t is in fact enforcing things that are our rights, and some things they think are or are not our rights on private property owners. And so they should be enforcing our 2nd Amendment right on property owners. If they want to close up or start a club store where you agree to say no weapons on the premise that is fine, but not for say a regular public grocery store.

Rob, show me where in the Constitution it says that your feelings create any kind of obligation for everyone else.

You’ll feel a lot safer if you
          – have a weapon
          – are trained to use it
          – have training on the legal use of force (which you get as part of applying for a license to carry)
          – have legal authority to use it (such as a license to carry)

than you will just hoping that criminals will respect your feelings, or at least wait to victimize you until the police can arrive to stop them.

        • Ga Gunny 2022 on November 25, 2022 at 9:49 am

I’m curious, what makes you think you have a right to feel safe?

        • Grumpycurmudgeon on March 6, 2023 at 2:25 pm

Unfortunately the point being made here. That I clearly understood. Considering I never took any gun classes, own guns, have prior knowledge of guns of any kind in my whole 34 years living in the USA. From California, to Arizona, and now Colorado. Which honestly can’t stand it here. And by the sound of it, Texas seems like the place to be for me. And anyone with sense for the true American rights. The kind we first was given long ago in this country. But has long been gone. And now a dream and not a reality much really in my opinion. In regards to were I’m currently at in my opinion.

Back to my initial point. From what I can gather. From others here with there pro gun choice. And what the implications are for others and all really. Is that the bad guys could care less what you may have implied at any establishment. Being there’s, your’s, or one you may be apart of. Being all of those who may believe no guns allowed is a good idea. Is simply wrong ultimately. As the bad guys will in fact not give any care to what rule may be in place. Which is the definition of criminals. They break the law for may reasons. And in the end. Will infringe and disobey no matter what. No sign will stop that in the end. And having penalties for all. Including law abiding good well being folks. Is not very smart. As they will be the ones who will be doing the right thing in correspondence to what bad guys will do from the start. Good guys can’t protect not only themselves, but anyone else who the bad guys impede on. Of it’s only the bad guys who are having weapons on them at these prohibited places. Then how do you expect they decide not to do these bad things with guns ultimately. If they know good guys with guns aren’t allowed and therefore won’t be on premises when they are when they have guns. Then they won’t find it difficult at the very least to commit whatever crime they decide to do in the end. But if they understood that there will be good guys with guns at these places they want to commit crimes at. Then they will be more decisive about actually doing any crime then.

        • Tom J on April 6, 2023 at 10:28 pm

There is no right to “feel” safe. There is a God-given right to keep and bear arms. If your business is part of the infrastructure that the public needs to use (hotel grocery store, etc.) then the God-given right to self-defense trumps your man-made private property rights. Same logic applied in the Heart of Atlanta Motel case. Property rights don’t mean you can ban black people who are traveling and need a hotel. Nor do they mean you can interfere with my God-given, natural right to keep and bear arms, which SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

        • MB on April 23, 2023 at 7:17 am

Well you may call the police IF you catch someone carrying, but only if you ask them to leave after catching them and they refuse then you can file a trespassing claim. So don’t think because you have a policy or post a sign that you can just have someone arrested. Because you can not, so take your so called ego and put it in check. You obviously don’t understand the difference between a criminal and a law abiding citizen and that’s a shame and obviously don’t understand guns and how they work otherwise you wouldn’t post such stupid signs. But you keep thinking your rights out trump someone else’s and see where that gets you in life.

        • CKL on January 28, 2024 at 2:40 pm

Wrong answer Rob. For your information, private businesses that are open to the public, such as restaurants and grocery stores, are considered places of “public accommodation”, and unless otherwise specifically provided for under your state’s statutes as gun free areas, are NOT legally able to prevent a person carrying a firearm when they are on those premises as a guest. They may kick you out, trespass you, call the cops, etc., however, that individual would have a strong case for a 42 USC 1983 deprivation of rights lawsuit against the place of public accommodation.
It is, and NEVER was, about whether YOU have a “right” to “feel safe”, there is NO SUCH THING. There also is NO RIGHT to “public safety”. It is about the person who is carrying a firearm for personal self-defense, a valid God-given and expressly protected RIGHT under the U.S. Constitution, to not be harassed by members of the Victimhood “feelings” Cult such as yourself.
Now, if it is your PRIVATE property that is not open to the public, such as your home, then yes, you can restrict my right to carry there, but don’t advertise an AIRBNB room because then I most certainly CAN carry there. Also, private businesses that are members only, as long as they NEVER open to the public even on random occasions, can control who can carry when on their premises.
Sorry your feelings are so important, but honestly, nobody else cares, nor do we have to.

        • Michael on February 28, 2024 at 7:22 am

Lol, nice try. I will be carrying and you will never know it. Have a nice day.

    • Philip beer on May 20, 2017 at 3:24 pm

So you can have a concealed carry permit in your state but all private businesses could post no guns which means you can’t go now were with your gun except car your house and in the street so what the hell would you want a gun if 90 percent of the places you go are private businesses where can can’t carry so if you are in a restaurant
and some one attacks you with a restaurants knife now you can’t stop them with your legal permit **** that

      • Jacob Paulsen on May 22, 2017 at 10:57 am

It doesn’t paint a pretty picture for sure but a few things to keep in mind. 1: Most businesses, particularly local businesses don’t have prohibitions. 2: In most states the business needs to post a sign or verbally communicate a restriction. Just having a company policy isn’t generally sufficient to actually prohibit firearms.

        • Ken Sasman on July 20, 2017 at 10:22 am

I beg to differ on two restaurants. Both my local Pizza Hut and Buffalo Wild Wings signs on their doors large enough to read from the car banning possession of firearms on their premises. I worked for the HUT and knew it was their policy. But that was before WI allowed concealed carry. I have not been in either store since. Nor do I patronize any of the other businesses mentioned. WI CC law allows you to enter a pub or restaurant that serves alcohol but you cannot consume while carrying. So if I plan on having a beer with dinner I just lock it in the vehicle until done.

          • Dutch in Texas on March 6, 2018 at 2:33 pm

Ken Sasman, in Texas, you can’t even have in your car if you have only one sip of alcohol. Zero tolerance, only if you have a license. If you don’t, you can be under the legal limit while having the firearm in your car.

Ninety percent of the businesses? When you consider all the places of business out there, this is a very small list of anti-gunners. I doubt that this even constitutes 1% of all businesses, but that is not a researched statistic, just my impression. We CPL holders are welcome most places. And, concealed weapons are not even legal in some of the places on that list in Michigan anyway, like movie theaters and bars.

      • David on September 4, 2019 at 7:02 am

Rob, when someone comes on your property (without your permission, and with you unarmed) the police will be there just in time to zip you up in a sack, period.

The people you need to be afraid of are the ones with weapons you can’t see, somehow the simple minded can’t understand that.

When a business refuses to allow open carry of firearms, and also refuses to provide ARMED security at all points of entry, they are telling you that your life is worthless to them and these businesses should be held liable for any death or harm that comes to their patrons.

I almost joined the Detroit Police Dept but my mother said she would leave if I did,my wife said I`m going with your mother if you do. One I could live without but not both. I am not a cook. I did not join. I still wish I had.

      • Ronald Williams on March 29, 2018 at 9:33 pm

It is the Liberal, Leftist and Communist mind that fails to realize the fallacy of their argument for Gun Free Zones.

People that have made the decision to commit mass murder go to whatever venue NOT to shoot a gun but to actually commit mass murder. The tool is incidental, seriously. It could be an explosive device, a car, truck, toxic gas, a flammable device even a mixture of several types of diversions to channel people into a kill zone.

Why are so many people killed in movie theaters? High numbers of people that mass murderers know for a fact pose no direct threat to them.

Why are so many people killed in school? Vast majority of occupants are unable to overcome the power of someone with any sort of weapon and it’s a killing field.

Why are large numbers of individuals in churches killed? Congregations are focused on one thing or person usually on the stage or standing behind a podium and their situational awareness is nonexistent for the most part. Seems like times are changing in churches though as the movement to arm church goers is OTM!

Any gun free zone where large numbers of people gather is a potential killing field… football stadiums, NASCAR races, auditoriums, hospitals, the public library, museums in large cities, any business that opens their doors to large numbers of people at set times. Theaters, sports bars during December, March, June and October or special sporting event times and mall stores operating during late November through the end of December.

Places where there are signs, “NO PENIS ALLOWED” are places where ladies exist without fear of being raped. But that gives ladies a false sense of security as the more advertised a place is with such a rule, the more tempting it is to a rapist.

I flatly tell business owners who tell me to leave my gun in the car….”you gonna issue me body armor while I’m in your store or provide armed security for me while I’m here?” Obviously the answer is always “no”, so I look the squarely and inform them that I’ll have to take my business to their nearest and most fierce rival.

The best remedy for a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. About the only exception to this rule is in Florida where the good guys employed to be armed security at schools refuse to enter when gunfire erupts from the guns of bad guys.

      • Rick on April 22, 2018 at 9:43 pm

I don’t care who you are, that’s darn funny. Thanks for the laugh. Maybe a pre-screened girlfriend? My wife married a cop, so she knew what she was getting herself into. She worried about me, but was very supportive.

    • Murica on November 2, 2017 at 10:36 am

do any of these places have armed security at every entrance with metal detectors and a place to check and store your pistol?

      • Gerwin on November 21, 2017 at 6:44 am

Great question – if I have to leave my gun in my vehicle because the store restricts my right to protect myself (see Texas law), and the store has no armed security or other measures – well, I would think that opens the store to a big $ civil suit if a shooter hits that store – another tier of liability for the store? Most large store chains are self-insured to a ceiling: however, one shooter would wipe most out. Look at – eg schools have security and some have trained armed teachers – now places of worship? Interesting — maybe a sign along with the state required sign 30.06 to restrict CONCEALED carry,
30.07 to restrict OPEN carry that states: leave your guns at home, enter store at your own risk – we have bullet proof vests on sale in aisles 4-5. I like shopping at Target – but if they don’t have a armed guard or some type of other safety measure – I don’t want to be a target in Target (sorry Target). Online shopping looks better and better.

        • Tina Harris on February 6, 2018 at 10:15 pm

In our state of Tennessee the law states that if they post a gun-free zone They are taking the risk on for the personal safety of all patrons that have a legitimate concealed carry permit. So they can pay for armed security guards or ensue the cost.

If they don’t follow the law for posting against guns, you don’t have to follow their ‘suggestion’ about not carrying in their establishment. However, if they ask you to leave because you have a gun, you must leave or risk arrest for trespass.

  2. jim- on May 23, 2016 at 4:53 pm

I don’t know about other states, but in Texas, if it’s not a sign with one inch block letters in both Spanish and English stating that pursuant to code 30.30 (I think) firearms are not allowed, it doesn’t count. The wimpy little sign at Whole Foods that says No Firearms won’t cut it. We’re pretty serious about freedom down here.

      • BillyBob Texas on May 23, 2016 at 6:36 pm

Para. 30.06 to restrict CONCEALED carry.

As you say, without those EXACT signs – you are free to do it all. Ignore ALL other signs.
As ALWAYS – if they ask you to leave, YOU MUST LEAVE, signs or not.

      • Vic Eizenga on May 24, 2016 at 9:31 pm

in Texas they must display. a sign 30.06 and or 30.07 to prohibit carring a weapon one is for concealed carry the other is for open carry.
It is against the law for them to call LEO on you unless a manager has spoken to you if the sighs are not posted.

      • Tony on March 17, 2017 at 10:46 am

        30.06 No concealed weapon
        30.07 No open carry
And u r right. Any other sign doesn’t count.

      • Kirm on June 17, 2017 at 2:19 pm

That’s so weird to me. Here in Nevada, a posted sign has no legal force whatsoever and there aren’t really any gun specific laws to back up businesses either. All they could do is ask you to leave for whatever reason and if you refuse to do So, they can have you trespassed, but you won’t really be in any legal trouble unless you simply refuse to leave.

The issue here is property rights and gun rights. Both are very important of course. So, it is frustrating that businesses choose to limit their clientele. But that’s there choice.

        • Art Vandelay on February 13, 2018 at 11:45 am

I would never open carry in public anyway. That’s just stupid, and considering the negative opportunities that open carry presents (reference the McDonalds article in the same email that this article was in), I don’t blame businesses for not wanting customers to open carry.

I frequent Nettie’s, a Mexican food restaurant in Bellevue, Nebraska. There’s a very large, prominent sign on the door that says something to the effect of “Concealed Carry customers are WELCOME in this establishment.”

On the contrary… criminals have been interviewed about what type of female they avoid when looking for prey. A woman with an umbrella is a no-go for these wimps. Imagine what a deterrent a firearm in plain sight is to them?

Additionally, whose child will an abductor target? The parent with a cellphone in their face or the parent with a firearm at their waist?

      • Doug on July 22, 2017 at 2:03 pm

Both are good points in making your decision, 2A Gal. But on the flipside, the cowards are still sneaky and have the benefit of planning their attack, time and place. I think the attention open carry causes and that vulnerability outweigh the deterrent factor of open carry for me. I mean, a second of inattention and some creep has his hand on your gun. That is fighting for your life.

        • Ronald Williams on March 29, 2018 at 9:03 pm

As a CCW instructor I have to disagree. It really depends where you are at and even what state you’re residing in. I practice what I preach….. I encourage both methods. I openly carry to stimulate conversation and show the Yankees transplanted down south that people with a gun on their side are not criminals, we have a right to do so and they need not be concerned. I’m out and about quite often and the places I patronize would think that something is wrong if I were not armed. I’ve left my firearm in the car on purpose at times just to test that suspicion and have on a few occasions been questioned if I had “forgotten my gun.”

Inattention – Inattention of any kind, openly carrying or concealed, can result in a fight for your life. You help prove that by your statement…..”cowards are still sneaky and have the benefit of planning their attack, time and place.” I’d have to assume that the chances are 50/50 that a criminal planning on launching an attack will be on the side of the person where the presence of the firearm is shielded and he has no idea of that person being armed. Not a good thing to be committed to the attack and upon launching it find yourself staring down the business end of a Glock or in fact shot! Remember, people who commit armed robbery are not among the sharpest tools in the chest and also have the poorest of firearms skills and even poorer firearms knowledge.

I can quote many sources over decades that criminals have in fact bypassed people that were openly carrying, most of which have come from the very mouths of criminals. They have stated they saw the firearm on the man (or woman) but thought twice about robbing them because their decision to attack could have been detected and they didn’t want to risk being shot and killed.

2Agal think about this. If you have a fire arm on your hip. And The bad guy can see it. He can take it and kill you with it before you can draw it. Easily. Don’t be fooled. Just a warning.

  5. Dennis Henson on May 23, 2016 at 5:28 pm

Modells sporting goods has a no gun policy. I was wondering if they sell firearms. As for all businesses that ban open or concealed carry, they get no business from me.

  6. Bob W on May 23, 2016 at 5:43 pm

Kind of a stupid article. I am retired law enforcement and have carried in everyone of the locations that are in my local area. The object is, if you have a CCW, keep it CCW. No one should see it anyway. The only time I would use it would be in an extreme situation, like an active shooter. Anyone that open carries is losing the drop on a suspect and anyone displaying a weapon should only be displaying it when they are using it. Even then it is tohidz the gun, gives you another advantage against an armed suspect.

    • Jacob Paulsen on May 23, 2016 at 5:46 pm

Bob, we hope that gun owners will use their wallets to support businesses that respect their right to carry. This isn’t about how to avoid trouble as much as it is about how to vote with your pocket book.

    • Billy Arney on May 23, 2016 at 6:01 pm

Wow! as a retired law enforcement officer, you actually condone and seemingly encourage the ILLEGAL carry of a weapon into business that has the right to request you not to? Good thing most other LEO’s are honest and uphold the law they are sworn to.

      • BillyBob Texas on May 23, 2016 at 6:44 pm

        Billy,
In Texas ALL signs are ‘illegal’ except the ones that are EXACTLY like the State requires in order to ban either Concealed or Open Carry. We ignore them.
Unless they are correct paragraph 30.06 for Concealed and 30.07 for Open Carry restrictions, and are posted in one-inch-block letters in both English and Spanish, on all entrances, the signs can (and are) routinely ignored.
However, if the business asks you to leave, you MUST leave, sign or not.

      • Francis Picray on May 23, 2016 at 7:33 pm

Unless These businesses are in jurisdictions that have passed laws to prohibit the carry of weapons in these type of establishments it is not ILLEGAL. It is their policy and like I said before my right to lawfully carry trumps their policy. Do you think, as has been already stated, any of these people care about your safety. No matter what anyone says, your life is in your hands and no one else’s. Remember Luby’s in Texas. Their policy ends where my rights begin.

      • Bob in Florida on May 23, 2016 at 10:02 pm

        Billy Arney –

Be careful to use your terms correctly and to be certain of the nuances of the laws in all the states.

For example, in Nevada and in Florida (two states I know well) it is NOT against the law to carry into the business establishments listed. It MAY be against company policy (either, for patrons or, for employees) and stated on posted signage. In those cases it is not ILLEGAL – it merely subjects you to expulsion by store personnel IF they notice you violating those policies. In the case of employees, they may be fired for violating those policies. Members of the public MAY be asked to leave and, if they do (promptly and without argument) no charges can be filed; if they do NOT leave when asked, they MAY be charged with violating trespass LAWS (in some jurisdictions, it may be armed trespass).

It is my understanding that, in Texas, the signage must meet some very specific size and wording requirements that are spelled out in the relevant statutes. IF NOT properly worded, they do NOT hold any force of law.

My point being that your attack on the retired law enforcement officer’s post may have been based on incomplete information on the laws in the many states.

I myself have carried in many of those very establishments, in different places, and, I ASSURE you, it was NOT ILLEGAL in any of the places I did so!

My wife and I are about to leave on another multi-state trip from the bottom to the top of the country. I already have researched the carry laws in each of the states we will be passing through – and/or staying in (and there is a difference) – to see how the laws in each differ from what we are used to. I carry, with us, a book (revised frequently) that displays the major aspects of the gun laws in all 50 states. Granted, this small reference book is not the full text of the applicable laws (those are available on line – for most states); but, they will keep the casual traveler cognizant of the most likely points of unwitting violation as we move from state to state.

How many drivers do you know that would go to that extent for the driving laws in the various states they plan to visit on a cross-country trip?

My point is that most responsible gun carriers are aware of the variation of laws and the degree of enforcement in various states. Most, who would not be too concerned about getting a traffic citation for – for example – making a right turn on red where it is not permitted, are not willing to risk –
        Loss and/or confiscation of their firearm;
        Significant fines and/or incarceration;
        Having to find and retain an attorney in an area they do not live in but were travelling through;
        Spending a significant amount of time and money on a significant court proceeding to resolve the issue;
Loss of their entire estate in the effort to accomplish the foregoing.

If we can issue 50 different state driver’s licenses that permit us to travel seamlessly from state to state; why can we not do the same with carry permits?
Can you imagine the hue and cry that would go up if driver’s were faced with the same penalties that gun owners are faced with as they travel from place to place? . . . .,
and one is an enumerated Right in the Constitution!

        • Michael B. in Florida on November 22, 2017 at 6:18 pm

Thank you, Bob, for your information. I will continue to carry everywhere and leave when asked to do so.

Responsible law abiding citizen who has served 20 years in the service and is retired law enforcement ought to be allowed to carry concealed EVERYWHERE in public.

What are the companies and legislative thinking?

The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. If you wait for the law to show up, you may be dead.

We must take our Country back by trained good guys everywhere.

He’s not breaking the law if there’s no sign posted, I’ve been in 90% of these businesses because there was no sign or not the proper sign. I follow the laws laid out before us and still manage carry in places that claim to be anti-gun because they didn’t follow the law as required to keep weapons out. And 75% of the time you will be confronted in places you can’t carry. I’m not saying break the law but what I will say is that criminals don’t follow the rules and if you not willing to meet that threat on that level your going to lose.

In Virginia, the way I understand it is the signs do not have the force of law. If you are caught carrying in a place with signs, all they can legally do is ask you to leave. If you do not leave, then you can be charged with criminal trespass.

      • Jay Allen on June 14, 2017 at 7:10 pm

Bill my guess is the LEO’s that carryies all have their shield on them, including retired LEO’s. Yes Bill, most departments issue a retired shield to officers. With that retired deputies and officers are allowed to carry concealed in their county or jurisdiction. Most states that have CCW or CPL require all LEO’s to apply for one if they intend to carry off duty outside thier county or jurisdiction.

  7. sikpupyjim on May 23, 2016 at 5:43 pm

In southern Mississippi and Louisiana, I visit nearly half of these places regularly, I have never once been given a second look for my open carry. I believe that what is posted as national is also sensibly afforded leniency based on local proprietary management and ownership.
Now Hardee’s at one time only my local location had a no firearms sign, so I would drive the opposite direction(From MS to LA) to a different location that did not have a ban sign, shortly after I accidentally busted a female member of management in the men’s room with, of course, a person of the male persuasion. She did not appreciate my presence and called the police to have me removed. Shortly there after a sign was placed in the window. So no more local Hardee’s for me. I will continue to view their windows to see if I find anymore that deny us our rights while they hope to profit from our dollars.

  8. Billy Arney on May 23, 2016 at 5:54 pm

while i am 100% for the legal carry of firearms, i also realize there is a lot of misinformation about places who do not feel the same way. Outback and Chili’s both post signage about prohibiting the carry of unauthorized weapons, they do not prohibit anyone lawfully carrying of legally licensed firearm.

I agree with Bob W. I too have carried in many of those establishments with no unwanted attention but I do carry concealed and that is the only way to be armed in public. If your state has a no enforcement policy on no guns signs then why worry just keep it concealed.

    • Spartacus on March 25, 2017 at 1:46 pm

Something else one of my adult children is employed at one of these said business. And here is a pill for you to try and swallow. My son informs me one evening sitting in my MAN CAVE that one of the day day manager’s prides himself bragging to the other’s while probably wearing his Minnie Mouse panties that he gets a charge out of telling everyone who enters this corporate business while open carry that they must leave immediately or be arrested for trespass. So I decided to challenge this fairy. And I could tell as he approached me he had something important to say. I stopped him in mid sentence and simply told him. Do you own this business and if not get me the owner. If not I ask him are you an officer of the law? If not and are an employee I would suggest that you go and read your employee’s handbook. Which clearly explains the rules and the proper way to approach a person with open carry. Then said excuse me I have 1 more item to put in basket so I can check out.

    • Spartacus on March 25, 2017 at 1:49 pm

      • law-abiding-citizen on March 25, 2017 at 5:42 pm

The Constitution does not grant the right to bear arms (or any of our other rights for that matter)- it only attempts to prevent the government from infringing on them.

Our rights come from our creator, whatever it is you believe in. You should also probably go pick up a copy of the Constitution have all the other Founding Documents, as there are several references to God (aka: our Creator) in there.

I regularly carry concealed in some of the listed stores–Sprout’s, Tom Thumb (Safeway owned), Maggiano’s. I did not see a 30.06 sign at any of these stores, so chl is not prohibited in them. This is Texas; the sign is required to prohibit concealed carry. Yes, I agree open carry is not wise. The statements by the corporations that they discourage firearms in their stores, but abide by local laws means the local laws prevail.

  13. 2A on May 23, 2016 at 7:18 pm

Since these business establishments prohibit my right to arms and self protecttion my view is that they assume protection for my personal safety by having armed guards, off duty police officers, or police officers on site to perform that duty. If I am hurt by violence I will sue them for not meeting the standard of self protection.

    • Pete on December 1, 2016 at 8:45 pm

It’s funny. The businesses here in Fla that display these signs have a few UNARMED security officers. I asked some of them (Names never to be revealed) to be honest and tell Me if they hear gunshots what will they do. Without exception their response was I am here to observe and report only. Several said they would run like hell but NONE of them are there to protect anyone and CAN’t do a thing. So one of the writers was right here. If I am a legal CCW holder and I have to place My gun in My car and get hurt in their malls My lawyer said it would only cost them a million per person PLUS if My gun was stolen they are liable and will be replacing the gun!

Any sign at the door of any public serving place that bans guns,,, is just an open invite for anyone with a want to,,, to shoot up the place till the police arive,,,at least 5 to 10 minuts. In that time,, just one person with a conceal and carry could end it, and save peoples lives. Those signs are an invitation for those that want to make a name for themselves with their gang, or religion, ect. Take away the right of carry and u invite in the ones that wont pay attention to those signs. Just how unwise can this nation get??? REALLY

I worked at Advance Auto where there was a No CCW for employees. As a licensed carrier, I checked the employee handbook which stated something to the effect of unless allowed by local or state law. My manager maintained that I could not carry in the store anyhow. Due to a run-in with a table saw, I was not working there much longer, so I didn’t get the opportunity to become a test case within the company. Might have been fun – he was/is a pompous sort.

I am going to carry my weapon anywhere and everywhere I go except for government buildings where it is against federal law to carry. I have carried and will carry in any and all of these facilities I go into. If they are naive enough to think that we, as armed citizens are going to take our weapons and leave them in the car instead of carrying, well so be it. What they don’t know will not hurt them. It looks by the list that it is almost impossible to boycott all of these locations, but it is also not realistic to think CWP holders will not carry in their locations. If on the other hand, someone happens to see my gun while I am in there and I am asked to leave, I will never enter that location again.

    • Ron W on April 22, 2018 at 4:36 pm

Federal laws against carry of weapons is an outrageous violation of the U.S. Constitution, since it has NO delegated powers for any gun laws pertaining to the People, but only for those it EMPLOYS in its service. (Article I, Section 8.16) And without delegated powers, the Federal Government may do NOTHING according to the 10th Amendment. Then there is the 2nd Amendment.

I open carry and have for some time, I have never been harassed and actually thanked by a customer at a Walmart, people have stopped me and asked what kind of gun I have. I did get asked to cover my gun at a Costco. As far as the open carry versus conceal it can go both ways if someone sees you carrying they might think twice about robbing the place or you. Perhaps the compiler of the list should cite specific States, Cities, or note that some businesses may say that they “prefer” not to have firearms on the premises but respect the local laws.

Not allowing guns would only count if, 1) You are open-carrying, or 2) You are involved in an incident and thus found to have a weapon on your person. I will continue to conceal carry anywhere I want to (even in a U.S. Post Office for example) and take my chances. Aside from infringing on one of our rights, it just become too cumbersome to deal with. A no-gun policy is simply a position born out of ignorance, in my view.

Despite Safeway’s official corporate policy against guns in their stores, I haven’t noticed any signs indicating they have this policy in Safeway stores in my state, Washington. I have seen customers OPENLY carrying pistols in my local Safeway on a few occasions without appearing to alarm anyone, or being asked to leave by store employees. I sometimes carry a concealed firearm when in Safeway stores, and I have noticed tell-tale signs that others doing so as well.

  51. Joe on July 8, 2017 at 6:38 pm

Shoe carnival does NOT have anything posted at front door stating they do now allow openly carrying, but will rudely demand you leave the store. Same with half price books.

Nice to know every place where only criminals can carry guns. So I can stay away and feel safe. It’s time for the old quote. Outlaw Guns and Only Outlaws well have Guns.

  53. Todd on July 19, 2017 at 7:02 pm

I find this list is not accurate. The Panera and Target I frequent have no postings, as required by Texas law, that prohibits any form of firearm carrying. I am not sure about the rest as I do not frequent them.

    • Jacob Paulsen on July 19, 2017 at 10:10 pm

This list does NOT represent businesses that actively prohibit guns everywhere. It does accurately show companies that have active policies against guns. If that company chooses to go to the necessary steps to enforce their policy or not in any given state is going to vary significantly. Target for example has a corporate policy but they choose not to post it in ANY of their stores meaning that in most states their policy is void and unenforceable. Panera may or may not enforce it in any given state depending on posting requirements and the feelings of the local franchise owner.

One of those theaters locally does NOT put up the “No Gun” signs though it is corporate policy. They have armed off duty police (In uniform) as security sometimes. I saw one local cop check a guy’s ID and carry permit and he tell him to “keep it covered” and not toss him. I’m sure corporate would of had him toss him.
As for the sports bars or restaurants that serve booze it is not a bad policy. Drunks are bad enough unarmed! As for “Waffle Houses” and all the crime reports I’ve seen from them, they need a HMMV with the new tri-barrel .50 caliber in the parking lot. With a 400 round belt.
Of course that theater might just be avoiding litigation in Pennsylvania. there is no law that SPECIFICALLY allows anyone on private property to post “No Gun” signs and it has official power. if they see it and ask you to leave and don’t, the cops can arrest you for “Defiant Trespass” and you’ll lose your carry permit.

And all of those store/restaurants/malls that are listed as being anti gun, I have boycotted! I chose to spend my money at places who support the 2nd. I even asked for my membership (the 100..00 one) money back from Costco, a month after I joined when I found out they were anti gun. And yes I told them why I wanted it refunded, and they did refund it.

Not currently, but that is a good request. We’ll work on that and I will update this article when available.

  61. Wendy C. on August 9, 2017 at 11:03 pm

You can add Gander Mountain to your list. Although some have gone out of business now, they do have 30.06 and 30.07 signs,on their entry doors. This is so stupid as they sell freaking guns and ammo. I even told one of the guys at the gun counter they are hypocrits. I have not been back. And this is Texas!! I find it absolutely stupid if you sell firearms but don’t allow them in even if concealed. Texas Roadhouse has a sign at the door that is a pic of a gun with slash thru it, however that’s not legal signage. I only conceal carry anyway and will abide by the laws. I cant afford not to.

  65. Ed Harley on October 21, 2017 at 10:53 am

I have concealed carried in about 90% of those businesses and will continue to do so. Good luck stopping me.

  66. Mike on October 22, 2017 at 2:20 pm

The property owners rules are supreme. If it’s private property, the property owner decides if you can carry of not. I own a gun. You still cannot carry in MY HOUSE. Same applies to business. My property rights override your 2nd Amendment rights on my property. Your rights end where mine begin.

  67. JKFuller on October 30, 2017 at 8:45 am

This is where open carry hurts firearm owners who conceal legally to protect themselves. Open carriers make people antsy so now many companies are put in a position to publicly prohibit firearms completely (whether they actually enforce it or not). I hope you open carriers are all happy. It is much more desirable for companies to publicly denounce the carrying of firearms in an effort to make customers comfortable than to lose customers that feel uncomfortable around firearms because they are misinformed.

  68. Michael on October 30, 2017 at 1:18 pm

In Oregon those policys have no rule of law behind them. If they see you are armed, all they can do is ask you to leave. If you refuse then they can call the police and you could be charged with criminal trespass but’s it. If noticed you are carrying concealed and they ask you to leave and you do, then that’s that. I have carried concealed into many of those locations without issue. Those who open carry are just plain stupid and shouldn’t have a gun with that mind set anyways. All open carriers do is present a “Look at me” persona and that idiotic.

  69. Chuck on October 31, 2017 at 10:05 pm

I’ve been into the vast majority of the places listed above with my firearm. I usually go in, use the restroom, and then tell the manager that if my gun isn’t welcome, then I’m not welcome and I leave.

  71. Blaine on December 13, 2017 at 7:16 am

As a business owner you can not refuse service based on race or refuse service to gay people but you can refuse service to law abiding citizens that have gone through the process obtaining a legal license to carry a firearm. Hmmm

  72. Vance on December 15, 2017 at 10:30 pm

In Florida, statute 790.251 addresses this, no business can deny my right to carry concealed. Attempting so could result in fines from 5k up to 100k ( fs. 790.33).

  73. Parrish on December 22, 2017 at 8:53 am

I’m sorry to say, that all of those businesses are stupid beyond all recognition. Do you think anyone that is out to do harm is going to look at and follow the rules what that sign states?!?!?! THOSE THAT SEEK TO CAUSE HARM WILL NEVER FOLLOW THE RULES, PERIOD!!!!!! Those that follow the law in acquiring the proper credentials to carry a firearm (either concealed or openly) are NOT the ones you have to worry about. It’s the people that are out there that HAVE the intentions to find vulnerable places that restrict law biding carry citizens so that they can go in and cause the most damage quickly without anyone fighting back. I’m sorry, but the there been WAY TOO MANY SHOOTINGS in locations where weapons were restricted. Heck even a church got hit in texas!! I mean common on people, get with the program. You business policy owners/makers think you are helping society by restricting law bidding citizens from carrying in your establishment? I will NEVER support any business that fully restricts carrying in your establishment. I would rather go to a place that only restricted open carry, cause guess what, you don’t know how many are concealed and I feel MUCH safer in that type of establishment than a full carry restriction. All those businesses that fully restrict carry, lose my business by 100%. I’m sure that goes for a lot of law bidding citizens that carry.

Badcock Home Furnishing my mother and I went into Badcock’s Home Furniture store located in Fort Oglethorpe Georgia.
Shortly after opening an $5000.00 account we went into pay a payment. I had recently gotten approved for my Georgia Carry Permit.
I was carry my .40 S&W with two extra Magazines in a shoulder holster.
There were no signs posted stating i was not allowed to carry inside that store. One of the employees that worked for the store is a Former New York Police officer.
Tried to tell me I could not come into that store with my weapon. I informed him i was a former Law Enforcement Officer from Florida. With a B.A. in Criminal Justice and according to the Law the Store must have a sign posted stating no guns allowed.
Then if and only if they see my weapon they can ask me to leave and if I dont then they can call the local police. At which time the local police can ask me to leave then if I refuse to leave I can be arrested.
The very next day the store had a sign on their door stating no weapons allowed on property. I still carry but since then have purchased a concealed holster so no one knows I even have a weapon on me.

  76. Rusty Williams on December 30, 2017 at 11:46 am

In Indiana signs do not carry the weight of law. In other words what they don’t know won’t hurt you. The most they can do is ask you to leave, which I would have no problem doing if they are going to be horse’s butts about it.

  77. Mark Hebert on January 7, 2018 at 11:17 am

Here in Virginia, If you open carry you are allowed to have alcoholic beverages in restaurants. So when I would like to have a beer or wine with dinner, I open Carry to several restaurants and then reconceal after I leave. To name a few, Bonefish Grill, Red Lobster, Outback Steakhouse. All three of these restaurants see my gun on my side when I walk in and they never say anything to me. I also sit to where my sidearm is always visible to everyone that comes by me. And just so you know, Virginia is the only State in the USA that lets you do this.

  78. Scott Miller on February 12, 2018 at 5:05 pm

Thanks for this list. I agree, it isn’t about whether or not you can get away legally with carrying concealed, or if your concealment is so good you won’t ever be spotted, it is about deciding who you want to give your money to.

The sad part is, no matter how many statistics you show people about CCW holders being safer than say, cops, not to mention how signs won’t stop criminals, people are just freaking stupid when it comes to legal gun ownership, and shut their brains off.

You can sue a business for anything. If you will win or not is up to a judge and/or jury. I’m not aware of any court cases in the past in which that has happened.

If it’s our right to have a concealed weapon, but some business advises against having that protection with you when you so choose, what trumps? So innocent law abiding citizens being pushed to lay down ours or our loved ones life, if some maniac decides to come into one of these “gun free” zones and start shooting, because some business says so?? That isnt right. If I had a CCP I would carry wherever I felt like I may need protection, no matter what business said what, and I would make sure it was completely concealed..

A conceal carry person in a Costco store in Las Vegas exposed his hand gun while looking at merchandise. An employee called the police and the cc was killed by police.

Also In Vegas a Bonnie and Clyde enter a Walmart headed to the gun section They were on the run from police. A cc confronted Clyde and Bonnie came up behind cc and killed him. They changed plans on getting more guns. I think police killed one or both.

As far as I understand it, in Utah you can carry concealed just about anywhere except secure locations, airports, schools, and houses of worship. However, if you are carrying concealed, who is going to stop you? Concealed is concealed, no one should know you are carrying.
Legally, no weapons signs carry no weight here for businesses. However, if they find that you are carrying then they will ask you to leave. If you comply, they cannot do anything. You can take your business elsewhere and they lose your money. If you refuse to comply, they can call the cops and have you trespassed.
Be mindful of what the sign says, specifically. I work for a place that displays signs saying “No firearms, knives, or other weapons of any kind allowed”. However, in small print at the bottom of the sign it says “Except pursuant to UCA Section 53-5-701 et. esq.”, which is the concealed carry code in Utah. People tend to jump right on the “It says no weapons” bandwagon without realizing that yes, it does say that but there is the exception based on the concealed firearm code.

  89. David on March 21, 2018 at 1:50 pm

Joannes and others posted they wish to make this a safe and comfortable environment for their patrons. I am sure the sick demented ******* that would come in and shoot up your store will take your views into consideration and choose to shoot up someone else business. That is what is wrong with the world, the gun does not commit the crown, its the lack of morals and decency in the individual carrying the gun. so if I save your ass form an active shooter by taking him out you gonna sue me. Fine go for it, next time Ill just let your sorry *** die.

People kill people with cars, bats, sticks, rocks, fertilizer, bottles, drugs, booze and many other things. I am a law abiding citizen who chooses to carry and I will defend myself and my family in whatever way necessary. Again I will carry in all these regardless – any way most of them do not know the legal posting and do not post at all.

I go to Costco a couple times a month. Once in a great while I’ll go to CVS to pick up an Rx for my wife. I’ll go to Jack in the Crack maybe twice a year. When I go to these places my gun and spare magazine go with me. If they told me to leave I would because at that point I would be trespassing if I stayed. In CA a no gun sign at a business is policy, not law. To be law the sign must have the applicable Penal Code on it. I don’t go to any of the other businesses listed, and their policy is a factor in my decision.

  94. Mark on May 1, 2018 at 10:57 am

“No Firearm” signs in Kentucky have no force of law unless they are posted on property that is specifically
mentioned in State Law as being off limits to those with a Permit/License to Carry. If you are in a place not
specifically mentioned in the law that is posted and they ask you to leave, you must leave. If you refuse to
leave then you are breaking the law and can be charged. Even if the property is not posted and you are asked
to leave you must leave. Always be aware of the possibility that responding Police Officers who may have
been called without your knowledge and may not know the laws on trespass etc. could arrest you even if you
    are within the law.

  95. Annette on May 4, 2018 at 11:43 am

Most hospitals have a “no weapons” policy and many have metal detectors, especially at Emergency Department. This includes everyone, even LEO. They handle a lot of mental health and sometimes people who have been in fights or domestic altercations or even gang shootings. I think for the protection of all, this may be a wise choice. A weapon can also be stolen and with the ingenuity of some murderers, it would be much worse for someone to die by an officer’s stolen gun, knife, or other weapon. What is the thought on that situation?

  96. Kricket on May 13, 2018 at 10:20 am

Its called taking a stand. dicks chose to not sell the single most popular fire-arm style in america…. the ar15. as a consequence they have had three companies sever business dealings with them…. springfield armory which makes several of the more popular pistols on the market, mossberg which makes some of the more price friendly shotguns and rifles, and now hi-point which is maybe not the best quality but they are rather dependable and affordable. as for me and my family, we will drive past dicks and maybe even pay a few dollars more at a store that does respect the 2nd amendment when we are in need of sporting goods. thats called voting with your wallet.

    * for me it is not just shopping for guns, it is shopping in general. if i need shoes, camping gear, fishing pole…. i will not give my money to Dicks or any sporting goods store. Nor will i spend my money at restaurant, gas station, cloths store… etc, that doesn’t believe in your respect the 2A.

In Nebraska they have to post a sign. However there is no requirement for what the sign looks like or exactly where it is placed. Its a misdemeanor to carry a gun in a business that bans them. But some are not good at posting notice were it can easily be seen.

  101. Mort on August 10, 2018 at 11:44 pm

Yeah, this is a useful list… but pragmatically, a lot of it is undoubtedly influenced by regional attitudes (and even areas-within-regions may differ…). I live in a 2A state and 2A town, and almost all of the businesses listed above will not say anything to me if I open carried. But there are some neighborhoods in town where certain stores may cater to affluent Democrat zombies and attempt to pick a beef over it… it’s possible. The entire “university district” and “artsy fartsy” area has posted no-firearm signs like crazy. I just choose not to shop in Posted Anti-gun areas.

Since 2016 when this was written, there is a great App now maturing called “Posted!” which allows crowdsourced feedback on how each establishment treats their 2A customers. Highly recommended.

All said, as a motorcyclist… posted or not… I am not endangering the public by leaving my gun unsecured outside– and I am not going about my daily business unarmed– so, I guess Me & Society are in a bit of a pickle sometimes, hmm? What I have tended to notice is: concealed means concealed… and life goes on. And if there was ever an incident where concealed became not-concealed, people would probably thank you for your pragmatism, if not magically adopt your wisdom.

What we need is National Reciprocity, so that carrying loaded firearms in public can become completely normalized and accepted… EDC– wallet, keys, cellphone, gun. Nat Recp can get us there because we all know that crime won’t go up or down, negligent discharges will remain rare and aberrant, and people will choose nonconfrontational indifference over hysteria so long as people they know and associate with EDC their guns and behave themselves. It’s just time, America… it has been heading this way for nearly 30 years, as gun homicide has been cut in half, and the last desperate gasps of gun control are melodramatic freakouts full of prejudiced ignorance over “mass killings epidemic” that simply does not exist in reality.

  102. Dave on August 31, 2018 at 7:26 pm

I carry concealed. I have no intention of making the sheep uncomfortable. I’m just a humble sheepdog watching for wolves. I chose the lifestyle change. My family supports it. I don’t do business with any gun free zones. I refuse to spend my money at these stores and here’s the reason

    1. They will take some of my money and support the democrats, liberals, and lobbyists to infringe upon Americans constitutional rights and 2nd amendment rights.
    2. Will support in my eyes home grown terrorist groups with some of my money that fight against we the people’s constitutional rights.

Einnoceel, I’m working on verifying this. Found some contradictory evidence online but have reached out to their corporate office for comment. If you have documentation that you could share please send it to in*****@co************.com

      • Jacob Paulsen on March 25, 2019 at 4:18 pm

So just a follow up on this, I did connect with the corporate office today. They do prohibit employees from having firearms in the store, which is not awesome; but isn’t enough to get a company on this list I’m afraid. Perhaps in the future, we’ll do a separate list with companies that fit those criteria.

        • Lynn on August 22, 2019 at 9:53 pm

I work for Best Buy and I wish they had a different policy. I arrive early in the morning, in the dark, with no one in the parking lot or am leaving at that time. At the very least, I would like to have my weapon immediately when I am off the clock and exiting the building. What good will it do me locked in my car if I don’t get the chance to get to it? My reason for getting a permit made parole yesterday. An extra person walking me to my car isn’t going to deter someone who has had 8 years to think things over.

AutoZone band guns. They have a zero tolerance policy for employees. A few years ago a robber entered a Virginia Beach store, held gun to managers head, and had him go to the store’s safe. An employee went to his car and retrieved his pistol, came back in the store and ran the robber off. He was then fired due to the zero tolerance gun policy. Another business that was pro gun immediately hired the fired employee.

Tennessee has a law that if a business has a no gun policy they are legally liable for the safety of their customers and can be sued by customers if a shooter injures a customer.

MOUNTAIN AMERICA CREDIT UNION located in UTAH, IDAHO, NEVADA, ARIZONA, and NEW MEXICO is Anti-Second Amendment. I had the Boise City police called on me on Friday, May 29, 2019, for placing my firearm in my (rented) safe deposit box, to attend to business at the local Veterans Administration Building. The wrtten policy that was given to me on Friday, does not state anything about firearms.
I have a concealed weapons permit for the State of IDAHO and for the State of Utah.

It is absolutely amazing to hear the absurd reason behind theatre’s banning of guns because of the Aurora shootings. What they are doing, of course, is hanging out a great big sign on the front door that says ‘MASS MURDERERS ARE WELCOME HERE! WE HAVE DISARMED EVERYONE HERE FOR YOUR BENEFIT!’.

Great to see a list of places where it is safe to shop. Thank you from a US Army vet and a firearm safety instructor.

Wow. These comments are the greatest thing I hve heard. PLEASE keep boycotting. I know where I can go without worrying about some dipshit, pseudo-macho arsehole packing a handgun. I hope sane people will look at this site and learn where they can patronize business where they can feel protected from wacko gun nuts.

  120. Rick on June 22, 2019 at 9:15 am

How is it that businesses are allowed to prevent me from defending myself and family from lethal force while in their establishment? Has this practice been litigated?

    • Rich on August 9, 2019 at 9:53 am

Simple, it is private property. Same way they can declare “No shirt, no shoes, no service.” It is legal to walk around without shirt or shoes in public, you just can’t go into their places of business that way.

  121. Lori on August 7, 2019 at 10:24 am

Thanks for the great list of places to support. Have shared with like-minded friends

    • Rich on August 9, 2019 at 9:50 am

      Ditto

  122. Donna on August 9, 2019 at 6:27 am

Yes, same as above… Thank you for the list, now I know where to feel safe with my kids (I am stay at home mom and do all the shopping). Will stop going to WalMart as I don’t need to be around gun-crazy white males. Why is it that whites have a lot of mental health issues? I’m white and so is my husband, my two boys are not allowed to play violent video games. They hate it but we whites have a lose screw in the brain.

  123. Rich on August 9, 2019 at 9:49 am

Thanks for the handy list of businesses to support thanks to their safety. And just a point of grammar in your headline: I think you mean businesses that have “No-Gun Policies” not “No Gun Policies”

  124. Pete on September 3, 2019 at 6:47 pm

Fantastic! Add Walmart and Kroger to the list as of today. Scales are finally tipping in favor of common sense. I don’t want to take my family to places that encourage intimidation by gun owners. Keep that in your pants, thank you very much. Super helpful list!!! 🙂

  125. Lowell Cobb on September 7, 2019 at 12:21 pm

How many times have we heard someone say if only I had a gun when an idiot starts shooting a place up killing and wounding people! Any place that post do not enter if you are carrying is an open invitation to those bent on slaughter. Ever hear the expression like shooting fish in a barrel. I think any place that post the invitations up for these murderous people to enter ought to be held liable. Businesses that are trying to be politically correct need to think what they are doing.

  126. Sabrina S on September 8, 2019 at 12:59 pm

I simply can’t comprehend how a measly company policy can or could possibly have precedence over local & or federal laws! When are people gonna realize it’s NOT the ones who LEGALLY carry that commit crimes with ILLEGAL firearms! BTW I’m not even a person who even likes guns (they scare the crap outta me tbh) HOWEVER I’m a firm believer in a persons fundamental RIGHTS so be it they are legally expressing them!

    • Joe on December 15, 2020 at 7:38 pm

Sabrina, I understand if you have a fear about guns maybe you have or have not looked into being familiar with them and respecting them NOT fearing them. I recently took my initial CCW class and had a Holocaust survivor in the class. After listening to her horrific/sad stories I had full respect for her because she survived and at 75 yrs of age she was learning about firearms the right way. Kudos to her! As a suggestion, if you have the right trainer it would help you be more confident and not fearful of weapons.

  127. This is Texas on January 28, 2020 at 1:58 pm

Thanks for the list. I agree with restaurants that don’t allow open carry. Honestly I wouldn’t want to be having lunch with my Family next to 3 Fat guys in tank tops who are carrying an AR-15. Although I do agree with some of these posts about open carry, I think that if you are serious about carrying a gun you should get your LTC. I will not be giving any business to any place that doesn’t allow citizens with LTC. I think it’s ridiculous that anyone would deny us the right of protecting our loved ones when we’re out in public. I live on the border with Mexico, and our neighbors don’t allow their citizens to carry guns. The citizens are at the mercy of the cartels every single day. Kidnappings, home invasions, car jackings, and the list goes on. The second amendment gives us the right to defend ourselves which is a blessing. For those of you that think it’s ridiculous for us to bear arms, let me share a quote.

“Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, “Baa.”

Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog.” -Grossman, D., with Christensen, L., On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace, WSG Research Publications, 2004.

  128. Charles Luck on May 12, 2020 at 5:49 pm

If you’ve ever been around a anti-gun snowflake then you know the irrational behavior than can ensue at the sight of a gun. The corporate policies are tailored to avoid the fallout from these utopian dreamer snowflakes who freak out when they see a firearm. But they love watching endless amounts of violence at the movies and on TV.

I personally don’t care what they think. If the concensus is that I’m not welcome while carrying a concealed weapon, then why bother to conceal a weapon in the first place? Believe me, I conceal my firearm so I don’t have to deal with these frail minded morons.

I’m challenged when it comes to keeping my pants up, and I resort to using suspenders. I would much rather use a shoulder holster, or a gun belt and to hell with concealment.

So, if I go through the hassle of concealing my weapon to make these folks feel safe? Huh, do you believe I said that? Considering that I have a permit to carry, and have the right to carry in my state and under the Constitution of the United States; then what I have going under my shirt is none of their f__k’n business.

But I do agree, what’s the sense in patronizing businesses that use our money to support causes that we don’t believe in. No sense st all.

I AM A VIETNAM VET , JAN-DEC 1967 , AND A GUN OWNER AND LIFELONG HUNTER !! I CARRIED AN M-16 ASSAULT WEAPON IN VIETNAM AND GOT TO BE PRETTY GOOD WITH IT !!!! IT SAVED MY LIFE MANY TIMES , AND GOT ME OUT OF SOME PRETTY TOUGH SITUATIONS !! THAT BEING SAID , NO CIVILIAN SHOULD POSSESS OR OWN A WEAPON DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE MILITARY TO KILL AS MANY PEOPLE , AS FAST AS POSSIBLE , AND IN AS SHORT A TIME !!!!!! YOU DON`T HUNT WITH AN AUTOMATIC ASSAULT STYLE WEAPON , WILD GAME ANYHOW , ONLY HUMANS !!!!! AND I DON`T WANT TO HEAR THE SAME OLD SORRY ARGUEMENT ABOUT YOUR 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS EITHER !!!!! I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE OWNING GUNS , BUT I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM OWNING AN ASSAULT WEAPON DESIGNED FOR ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY , TO KILL PEOPLE WITH !!!!!!!!!!! AND DON`T TELL ME ABOUT TARGET SHOOTING EITHER !!!!!!! RANGES THAT RENT THE USE OF THESE WEAPONS AND SELL AMMO TO SHOOT IN THEM , WOULD SPRING UP ALL OVER AMERICA !!!!!!!! I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT SCENARIO EITHER !!!!! I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH CLIPS THAT HOLD MORE THAN 10 ROUNDS ALSO !!!!!! 15 – 20 – 40 – 5- – 100 – OR MORE ROUNDS IN A CLIP IS ENTIRELY TO MUCH !!!!! SOMEONE WITH A BACKPACK FULL OF 50 ROUND CLIPS TO KILL OR WOUND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE BEFORE HE COULD BE STOPPED !!!!!! LAS VEGAS COMES TO MIND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SENSIBLE GUN REFORM WILL BE ON THE TABLE IF JOE BIDEN IS ELECTED PRESIDENT , AND IF THE DEMOCRATS WIN CONTROL OF THE SENATE IN NOVEMBER , LAWS WILL BE PASSED TO RESTRICT OWNERSHIP OF ASSAULT STYLE WEAPONS ALSO !!!!!!!!!! ITS TIME TO GET 17 YEAR OLD RADICALS OFF OUR STREETS ARMED WITH AR-15`S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Jacob Paulsen on September 5, 2020 at 4:40 pm

Barry, you lost some credibility when you used the word Clip. Clips aren’t used with carbine rifles. I own a carbine rifle to shoot at people. People who threaten my life or the life of loved ones. As your own comment suggested, it is arguably the most effective tool for that situation and so I have it for that purpose. If you think somehow making carbine rifles illegal (good luck with that) would somehow stop mass killings from happening I think you are naive at best.

    • Mike Sparks on May 9, 2023 at 8:21 am

You are full of it. A semi auto is not an assault rifle.

Jacob, Inspire Brands ( https://inspirebrands.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Inspire-Brands-Fact-Sheet_Q3-2020-1.pdf ) owns a number or restaurants, including Buffalo Wild Wings and Sonic (which isn’t on you list but which, I believe, banned firearms when Chili’s did, in response to Open Carry Texas’ antics). Do it have a corporate policy on firearms or does it leave that up to its subsidiaries?

    • Jacob Paulsen on December 15, 2020 at 9:38 am

Thanks Matt. I’ve added Chilis and Sonic after seeing your comment and doing additional research.

Here is the situation in abut shell….. if you enter an establishment that has no sign posted and you are not breaking the LAW in any way but some how someone sees your firearm, all the establishments can do is ask you to leave and you should do politely and immediately.!

  132. Joseph Riccardi on March 3, 2021 at 9:46 am

Please add Suntrust/Truist Banks in Florida to your list. This is the response I received when I complained…
Good morning, Joseph. We’re sorry to hear we may be losing you as a client. We believe our primary responsibility to our teammates and clients is to provide a safe and secure environment to conduct work and business. Because financial institutions are regularly targeted for armed robbery, our teammates are particularly sensitive to firearms being brought into our branches. It is difficult for our teammates to assess the intentions of an individual with a weapon; therefore, the safest approach is to prohibit all weapons from SunTrust now Truist facilities. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your concerns with us today.

    • Jim Hogue, Plano, TX on April 7, 2021 at 3:25 pm

When CHL were initially issued in Texas. A bunch of businesses banned CHL holders from entering that business.

I recall that there was a small card that had been printed that essentially stated that this business banned CHL carriers from entering that store and “something” else about how much training CHL carriers had vs. an armed robber, and (other stuff, I forget) it ended with a comment I will not spend my money in this business, etc.

This cards were frequently taped/glued/etc. to the businesses doors.

They were so very successful that I no longer have one because they worked so well.

Does anyone have a copy of that card or the text?? I want to use the same type 0f card on Texas’ business that still insist on masks even though there is no state requirement.
      Thanks

      • Henry on August 27, 2023 at 6:33 pm

Not in Texas, but I had a bunch of inexpensive transparent stickers printed up by an address label company that said, “Management accepts full legal responsibility for the safety of unarmed customers on these premises,” and I would paste them on the windows near any no-guns signs.

  133. Pcrowder on September 2, 2021 at 7:40 pm

I am a regular Whataburger customer and rather not see open carry customers that I recently saw at a WhatABurger store in Lubbock Texas

  134. Sandra Jones on September 29, 2021 at 12:50 am

I was embarrassedly confronted and escorted off the premises of the Irvine Spectrum today because an employee walked into my dressing room while I was undressed TRYING ON CLOTHES at LULULEMON and saw my gun, safely in its holster, on the chair slightly exposed. I quickly covered it and made no reference. After I checked out , She called security and they tracked me down at another store and waited for me while I finished my purchase. It was beyond embarrassing and humiliating. There was NO SIGNAGE nor did I brandish or discuss at any time my CW. This is disgusting and it makes me even more bitter against moronic snowflakes!

  135. Scott Wexler on December 16, 2021 at 5:03 pm

I am very happy to visit and shop at any of these businesses. Feel much better, and I know I am safer, in places with firearm bans. This whole “good guy with a gun” myth is a croc.

    • Robert Vee on November 23, 2022 at 11:28 am

      Hey Scott
Do you think the lunatic/criminal shooters obey the store policies not to bring firearms into their stores? Good luck having a chance to protect yourself when the lead starts flying.

  136. Ben on September 10, 2022 at 3:43 pm

Don’t you love gun free zones like walmart and sporting goods stores that actually sell guns and ammo? And movie theaters and restaurants that have had shooting in the past don’t allow licensed citizens to protect themselves. I’m pretty sure none of these businesses have enough insurance to cover injury or death by a lunatic that can’t read the sign and starts shooting randomly.

  137. Cece on September 12, 2022 at 12:17 pm

How can any business stop you from doing a concealed carry? If no one can see it, then no one knows, so who would care?

After being questioned by gatekeeper while entering Costco whether I was carrying a firearm in a concealed side holster, I was informed that it was against store policy. Was told only law enforcement were allowed to have firearms in their warehouse. Said no you mean only law enforcement and CRIMINALS were allowed to have firearms inside their store. Won’t be doing much business with Costco in the future…

  140. john on December 9, 2022 at 10:38 am

Add City Furniture to the list of anti-gun companies.

  141. Jason Holland on January 16, 2023 at 10:03 am

Starbucks CEO also has made a request that people other than LEOs don’t carry guns openly or concealed into the Starbucks stores or the seating areas but there are no signs on their doors that prohibit firearms. Moreover the CEO ordered employees not to confront people who don’t comply with their request because they will be confronting armed individuals. As long as there’s no sign prohibiting firearms it’s perfectly legal to carry. If an establishment posts a sign prohibiting firearms then they lose my business because they don’t respect my right to defend myself.

  142. Henry on August 27, 2023 at 6:24 pm

If Safeway prohibits guns, they sure don’t have the stones to post their stores in Arizona or Texas. I’ve never seen a Safeway posted, all along the I-10 corridor!

    As for Panera Bread:
“We’re simply respectfully requesting that people leave their guns at home.”
You flatter yourself that you’re the one and only stop on any given trip I make.

  143. Jane Maxwell on September 18, 2023 at 10:31 am

You know…. Criminals don’t obey laws. They will bring in guns anyway. They stole them in the first place. Yet I, a law abiding citizen cannot bring my legal firearm to protect myself? That is utter lunacy.

  144. Michael on October 13, 2023 at 11:40 am

I’m a gun owner and support my 2nd Amendment rights. But reading these posts, a lot of these folks are “chest-thumpers” who conceal-carry but want everyone to KNOW they carry. I go EVERYWHERE except bars with my firearm firmly strapped, but guess what? Nobody knows I’m carrying. Why? Because I’m there to do business, not to “flex” on those who don’t think like I do. It’s the folks that are shoutin’ about “Muh guns are my sacred, Gawd-given RIGHT” and intimidating folks thru posts like these, or outside establishments that cause problems. Carry your firearm where you want to, and run concealed when you need to. just shut up about it, for Christ’s sake!!

It’s crazy to hear that I am more free here in Indiana than those in Texas. Here there is no legally recognized gun free zones on private property. Government buildings like schools, post offices and courthouses are still gun free, but I can open carry right past a gun free sign on Walmart’s door without breaking a law (even though I only conceal carry). Now if they notice and ask me to leave, I can be arrested for trespassing if I don’t.

  146. Paranoid Veteran on November 7, 2023 at 2:15 pm

I guess I’m just a paranoid veteran tired of stupid people, because stupid people will have weapons no matter what the laws are. We the People should be able to shoot back and protect all when the time comes. I guess the crooks and stupid people will always have more rights and freedoms.

I have been into Pete’s, target, CVS, and a few others on this list with a gun on me and have never had a problem. None of these display sign saying I cannot carry a gun so I intend to continue exercising my rights. They could have whatever policy they want but I have the constitution!
